Samsung Galaxy Note 3 gets Android 4.4 KitKat in UK

The latest version of Android is being pushed out to the Galaxy Note 3 as an over-the-air update, ending what’s been a lengthy wait for the OS bump on Samsung’s latest phablet.

A slew of user testimonies on messageboards confirm that the 4.4.2 edition of Google’s OS (KitKat) is up for grabs now for owners of unlocked UK versions of the handset. That’s those bought SIM-free and off-contract.

Those of you who picked up your Note 3 on a pay-monthly contract will have to wait while your carrier carries out compatibility tests with the software.

Although not a huge update by any means, the platform bump brings with it cloud printing, as well as a suite of bug fixes and performance enhancements. You’ll also get a tweaked phone app dialler and a slightly neater cosmetic overhaul for apps.

Perhaps most welcome though is that battery life appears have been improved, while the fact that Android 4.4.2 takes up less capacity than its predecessor means there’s more for apps, games and whatever else you store on your smartie.

The arrival of KitKat on the Galaxy Note 3 should incrementally improve the share of Android phones powered by the OS, take-up of which has been notably sluggish.

At the last count, just 2.5% of Android kits were running the software, testifying to Google’s ongoing problems with fragmentation. That compares with Jelly Bean’s 35.3% share.
