Samsung Galaxy Note 4: The five hottest rumours

The Samsung Galaxy Note 4 is due to be announced in a couple of weeks. The Note line of devices has been a huge worldwide hit since it launched back in 2011, and is credited with single-handedly creating the ‘phablet’ device.

So what can we expect from the latest instalment? If these rumours are correct, it’s shaping up to be the best yet…

1 All-metal chassis

According to a recent report, the Galaxy Note 4 will have an “all-metal design”.

Nothing too spectacular about that, you might think, but it would be quite a departure for Samsung. Its previous high-end devices have sported plastic backs with faux-leather stitching. Plenty of critics – this one included – have commented this makes the devices feel cheap and even tacky.

Which isn’t what you want when you’re paying north of £500.

But this could be about to change. Last week, Samsung launched the Galaxy Alpha, which sports a metal frame. And the same report that claimed the Note 4 will be all metal says the Galaxy S6 will be, too.

This could be the start of a whole new era for Samsung…

2 QHD screen

According to the spec list that leaked last week, we’re looking at a stunning QHD display – that’s a ridiculously high resolution of 2,560x1,440 pixels. That’s the same resolution as on the spectacular LG G3.

Because it’s slightly bigger than the G3, the pixel-per-inch count will be a little lower though – 515ppi, compared to the G3’s 538ppi.

Still, we’re not complaining. The G3’s screen was one of the best we’ve ever seen on a smartphone, so to have the same resolution but a little bigger would be an absolute treat to behold.

At 5.7 inches – the same size as the Note 3 – the Note 4 looks set to be the first Note that isn’t bigger than its predecessor. Again, no complaints from us. 5.7 inches is more than big enough, and that QHD resolution should look amazing at that size.

3 Unprecedented power

The spec sheet lists the Note 4 having 4GB of RAM, which would be a first for an Android handset.

The Note 3 had 3GB of RAM, and that was certainly no slouch.

4GB should make it an absolute powerhouse, ideal for chewing through the latest and greatest games, streaming videos, running the most processor-hungry apps, and anything else you can throw at it, all without breaking a sweat.

4 Two models

An insane amount of RAM is all well and good, we hear you cry, but what’s the processor like? Well, it depends which country you live in.

That’s because Samsung will launch two models of Note 4, one with a quad-core chipset, the other with an octa-core.

This is nothing new. Samsung previously launched different varieties of other flagships – like the Galaxy S5 and S4 – with different processors.

In actual fact, while one sounds much meatier than the other, reviewers have found not much difference between the two.

Rest assured, it will absolutely fly when it comes to performance.

5 16-megapixel camera

On the back will sit a 16-megapixel camera – as found on the Galaxy S5 – complete with optical image stabilisation and a dual-LED flash.

The other specs look very respectable indeed as well. Storage-wise, you get 16GB, 32GB, or 64GB, and all are expandable using microSD cards up to 128GB.

Android 4.4 KitKat – the latest version of the OS – is also expected to make an appearance.

And there you have it. All in all, it’s shaping up to be a corker. We can’t wait for September 3rd, when Samsung pulls back the curtain on the next Note.
