Samsung Galaxy A8s hints at S10 design

Samsung Galaxy A8s Infinity-O

Samsung has recently been debuting features in its mid-range phones that go on to star in its flagship handsets, which makes its new Galaxy A8s very interesting indeed.

The mid-tier offering is the first to use Samsung’s Infinity-O display. This is a screen with a ‘hole punch’ hole to house the front-facing sensors like facial recognition. It’s a different approach to the notches that have become omnipresent since the iPhone X introduced the concept.

A notch or ‘hole punch’ allows the phone to have an all-screen front while still retaining a front-facing camera. This is because of the move to borderless displays of late, in which it appears that the whole front of the phone is a screen.

The A8s’ hole punch is in the top left of the screen. Yesterday, we saw a case maker speculate that the Galaxy S10 Plus, due early next year, could feature two hole punches in the top centre of the screen.

The A8s is also the first of Samsung’s mid-market A-series handsets to lack a headphone jack.

Pre-orders start on 21st December, though no price has been revealed as yet. It’s also unclear if it will launch outside of China. But it gives us a pretty good look at how next year’s Galaxy S10 could look.
