Best Samsung Phones in 2022: Which Samsung phone should I buy?

If you’re looking for a new smartphone, Samsung’s are some of the best around. And they don’t come much better than its Galaxy S range – this is Samsung’s premium line-up of handsets, offering superb specs and features. Whether you want the latest in smartphone tech or you want an older device to suit your budget, Samsung's S series has something to suit everyone.

Samsung Galaxy S23: Everything you need to know

The Samsung Galaxy S23 is sure to be one of the best phones of the year.

Samsung has lifted the lid on the Galaxy S23, in what will surely turn out to be one of the biggest phone launches of the year. Samsung’s Galaxy Unpacked saw the South Korean firm launch not one, but three new Galaxy S models. And they boast new cameras, a new processor and a more durable build, among other improvements.

Three phones, three sizes

The Galaxy S23 range comprises three handsets: the standard Galaxy S23, the S23 Plus and the S23 Ultra.

The S23 is the smallest of the new phones, with a 6.1-inch screen. The S23 Plus is basically the same phone but with a 6.6-inch screen, while the S23 Ultra has an even bigger 6.8-inch screen that’s curved slightly at the edges. The S23 Ultra has some other improvements, too…

S23 Ultra: the best of the best

As well as a bigger screen, the S23 Ultra has a bigger battery than the other two models. Its 5,000mAh is an improvement on the S23 Plus’ 4,700mAh model and the standard S23’s 3,900mAh one.

But a bigger battery doesn’t necessarily mean longer battery life. A bigger screen will sap the battery faster, while the processor also plays a big part in how power-efficient each phone is.

The biggest improvement of the S23 Ultra over the other two is in the camera. The Ultra features a whopping 200-megapixel main sensor, up from the 108-megapixel one found in last year’s S22 Ultra. That’s four times as big as the 50-megapixel sensor found in the main camera for the S23 and S23 Plus. Which should mean your photos have oodles more detail.

But that’s not the only camera upgrade. Samsung has boosted the S23 Ultra’s night shooting skills, giving you better results in poor lighting conditions.

There’s even a dedicated mode for shooting the night sky, which will be amazing if you live out in the country where, every night, the sky is bejewelled with stars. But a bit less so if the only night light you see comes from a lamppost.

Faster chip

Usually, Samsung’s Galaxy S phones vary depending on where you are in the world. In some countries, Samsung equips them with a Qualcomm processor (Qualcomm supplies the brains for premium smartphones made by most brands), while in others, Samsung uses its own processors, which it calls Exynos. But not this year.

This year, the S23 range all feature a custom version of the latest and greatest Qualcomm chip. Called the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy, it’s been tuned specially for Samsung phones, which should make it perform faster than other phones that feature the standard Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2. We could be in for some blazingly fast speeds here.

Samsung’s own Exynos processors have been criticised in the past as not being quite as cutting-edge as Qualcomm’s chips. So this is good news for Samsung fans.

Stronger build

All three phones in the S23 range are the first to feature Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2. Corning Gorilla Glass features in all the best phones. It’s what makes them more hardwearing and less likely to smash when dropped. This latest version is the strongest yet.

Better selfies

It’s not just the rear cameras that have been improved. Samsung has beefed up the selfie snappers on all three S23 models, too. They now offer 12 megapixels, instead of 10 on the S22 range. Your selfies are about to get a lot clearer, so it's time to get Insta-ready.

Clearer images

All three phones have a feature called Advanced Vision Booster. This makes for better viewing in various lighting conditions. So you should be able to see images clearly, whether you’re in the dark or bright sunlight.

More robust security

The new S23 phones run Samsung’s One UI 5.1 user interface. This is what’s known as a skin that sits on top of the basic Android operating system. Samsung promises it will supply at least five years of security updates, so you can rest assured your data will be safe for the foreseeable.

Which Samsung phone is best for me?

The Galaxy S23 range has an option for everyone, whether it's the standard S23, the supersized S23+ or the even bigger and super-specced S23 Ultra (complete with an S Pen stylus).

What is the best budget Samsung phone?

Samsung has an excellent range of mid-range devices that suit smartphone users who would rather save a bit of money as opposed to splashing out on a premium model like the S22. The Samsung Galaxy A52 is our pick of the best budget devices.

What is the best Samsung camera phone?

The Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra undoubtedly has the best camera set-up ever seen on a Samsung smartphone. It's got a five-camera set-up made up of a 12MP f/2.4 selfie with autofocus12MP Ultra-wide lens, 200MP wide lens, 10MP telephoto lens with 3x optical zoom, 10MP telephoto lens (with 10x optical zoom) and a 12MP selfie camera lens.

Which Samsung phone has the best battery life?

At 5000mAh, the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra has the largest battery of any Samsung phone. But the largest battery doesn't necessarily mean the 'best battery life'. While the S23 Ultra has the biggest, it also has to work a lot harder to meet the very high-end specs and processing power the phone has. So you might find that a lower-budget Samsung phone, that has less demanding specs, could last longer than an Ultra.
