A Member of Parliament has backed BT's decision to upgrade the Etwell telephone exchange in south Derbyshire to support super-fast broadband.
Conservative MP Heather Wheeler told the Burton Mail that she was "absolutely delighted" the broadband provider had brought work on the exchange forward.
Consumers and businesses in the area will now be able to enjoy the advantages of next-generation broadband from autumn 2011.
Ms Wheeler explained that she had pressed the case for network investment in her constituency during a recent meeting with BT Chairman Sir Mike Rake and Chief Executive Ian Livingston.
"It is the result of a joint effort with South Derbyshire District Council and, clearly, going straight to the top was the right move," the MP noted. "South Derbyshire is going to be looked after at last."
Last week, BT announced the next 159 UK telephone exchanges set to be upgraded as part of its £2.5 billion next-generation broadband investment.
