Almost nine out of ten Northern Irish households will have access to super-fast broadband by 2012, it has been reported.
BT has announced plans to upgrade more than 2,400 cabinets across the Six Counties, helping to deliver nationwide 40Mb broadband deals.
The internet service provider said Northern Ireland would be one of the most highly-connected countries in the world - with 88 per cent coverage - when the rollout is complete.
Graham Sutherland, Chief Executive of BT in Northern Ireland, commented: "This is a great moment in Northern Ireland's broadband story.
"High-speed fibre broadband is transformational, it changes how we live, how we educate, how our businesses send their products and ideas around the world."
Earlier this year, BT announced that Derry-Londonderry would become the first city in the UK to be 100 per cent fibre connected, as it prepares for its year as European Capital of Culture.
