Deal allowance

Most contracts now offer unlimited texts and minutes. How much data you need depends on how you use your handset.

1GB per month: email, occasional web browsing and watching the odd YouTube video.

2GB per month: heavier web use, email regularly and occasional music and video streaming. For the average smartphone user, 2GB of usage should be just right.

3GB: Cloud-based photo services, streaming video, downloading music and regular email and social networks.

5GB or more: Regularly stream video and music, upload images to social networking sites and multi-player online games. Higher allowances let you make the most of your phone.

Contract length

One-month SIM only contracts give you the freedom to switch provider with just 30 days' notice if a better deal appears, while still providing more generous usage allowances than pay as you go deals. One month-sim only deals usually work on a rolling contract basis.

12-month SIM only contracts provide more generous usage allowances than one-month SIM only deals. However, because you're committing to a longer term deal, you haven't got the same freedom to switch if a better deal becomes available.

Data SIM only deals are short term or longer term contracts aimed at tablet and laptop users that entitle you to a set amount of mobile internet usage for a monthly charge.

Their major selling point is that they enable you to get online wherever there is 3G or 4G mobile internet coverage, so you'll no longer have to ensure your in range of a WiFi network.

Do I need a data only SIM?

Public Wi-Fi networks, such as The Cloud, BT WiFi or networks on the train that takes you to work, are now more widespread than ever. So on paper, it should be easy to get online with your tablet or laptop while you're on the go.

In reality, however, public Wifi isn't very reliable and too often provides an intermittent, patchy signal.

That's not ideal if you like to work on your laptop or tablet during your daily commute or while you're waiting for a client in a cafe. Or want to do some light browsing for pleasure to help your journey go by just a little bit faster.

This is where 3G or 3G data only SIM comes in. Sign up for one of the best data only SIM contracts, insert it in your tablet's or laptop's SIM tray and you'll be able to get online anywhere where there's a 3G or 4G mobile phone signal.

Choosing the best data only SIM

You can choose from one-month data only SIM deals, which operate on a 30- rolling contract basis and you're free to cancel at any time, or 12-month data SIM deals.

Naturally, 12-month data only SIMs tie you in for longer. But on the plus side, 12-month deals typically offer more generous allowances and are better value for money.

By way of example, you can pick up a 12-month data only SIM from around £5 per month, which gets you 500MB of usage every month. But if you choose a 12-month data only SIM from the same provider at £8 per month, you'll get 1GB of usage per month. That's double the data for £3 more.

Will all data only SIM card work in my tablet?

They will not. SIM cards now come in two varieties: microSIM and nanoSIM. Both are inserted in your tablet's SIM tray. The only difference is that the nanoSIM is smaller.

If you've got a newer iPad, such as the iPad Air or iPad mini ranges or the iPad Pro, you'll need a nanoSIM. The same goes for newer Android tablets, such as the HTC Nexus 9.

Got an older iPad, such as the original iPad or the iPad 2,3 or 4? If so, it's a microSIM you need. MicroSIMs are also compatible with the Nexus 7 Android tablet.

Will all data only SIMs work in my laptop?

As with tablets, a good guide to whether your laptop is compatible with nanoSIM or microSIM is its age.

There are too many brands and models to list here, but microSIMs are much more common in the world of laptops. The quickest way to know for sure if it's a microSIM or nanoSIM that you need is to look up your model online.
