OnePlus has announced it will release Europe’s first commercial 5G phone next year. The handset will run on EE’s mobile network and use Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 855 processor.
OnePlus made the announcement at the Qualcomm Snapdragon Technology Summit 2018 in Hawaii.
OnePlus has previously been a niche smartphone brand, aimed at those looking to stand apart from the crowd. This positions it at the forefront of innovation. The firm has recently pursued a more mainstream approach, stocking its latest handset, the OnePlus 6T, in physical stores like John Lewis.
According to Counterpoint Research, OnePlus is now one of the top five high-end Android brands in the world.
“The pursuit of speed has defined the OnePlus DNA since OnePlus was founded five years ago,” said Pete Lau, CEO of OnePlus. “There’s no one more suitable than OnePlus to make a 5G smartphone. Our users are always eager to try new things and they are now ready to experience the next generation of connectivity and speed. In response, OnePlus has poured efforts into 5G research since 2016. Today, we stand poised to embrace the dawn of 5G.”
5G promises speeds of at least 20 times faster than 4G, with some estimates saying downloads could be up to 1,000 times faster.
