Ofgem has today revealed that more consumers than ever are using comparison sites to shop around for their gas and electricity. Ann Robinson, Director of Consumer Policy at Uswitch.com, says: “Energy bills are one of the most costly household expenses so it’s vital that consumers have as much choice as possible when switching provider. It’s encouraging to see more people using comparison websites and – with a difference of over £300 between the cheapest and most expensive deals – the benefits to consumers of being able to look easily across the whole market are clear.
“Comparison sites also play a significant part in making the UK energy market more competitive, by providing new, smaller suppliers a platform to challenge the dominance of the big six.
“Despite this, just ten or so per cent of consumers switched provider last year. We have called on the Competition and Markets Authority to look at ways to increase consumer engagement as part of their ongoing enquiry into the energy market.”
