Uswitch.com comments on Ofgem ‘white label’ proposals

Today Ofgem has published proposals which could mean that British Gas and SSE will be required to tell customers if they can get cheaper deals though their ‘white label’ brands, Sainsbury’s and M&S Energy, in addition to their own tariffs.

Commenting on the proposals, Tom Lyon, energy expert at Uswitch.com, says: “Increased choice for consumers is a good thing but there is a danger that Ofgem could be throwing the baby out with the bathwater. Sainsbury’s Energy, for example, currently offers the third most competitive deal on the market. We would be concerned if this ruling means British Gas and SSE make their ‘white label’ tariffs less competitive in future to avoid having to advertise them on their own bills.

“Our advice to consumers looking to switch is to always look across all energy providers before deciding on the best deal.”
