LG's new Optimus GT540 has appeared online, promising to bring Android-based smartphone fun to the masses with its basic hardware and low cost.

LG's French operation inadvertently slipped pictures of the phone onto the internet yesterday.

The good news is that the LG Optimus will use Android 2.1, although to counteract this positive is the less exciting fact that the three-inch screen will use the same resistive technology that LG has been putting into its entry level touchscreen mobiles for a few years now.

On the back of the Optimus there is said to be a three megapixel camera and music fans will be pleased to see the 3.5mm headphone jack.

Both Wi-Fi and 3.5G connectivity will be on board the GT540 and LG is set to launch the phone in at least four different colours, including pink.

Since the phone turned up on LG France's website, there is a chance that it is getting a release across Europe, meaning that a UK launch is on the cards.

We've had cheap Android phones - see the HTC Magic - for a while now, though. But having Android 2.1 is a bit of a coup in a cheapie, i guess.
