O2 has released the latest Android update for the HTC Desire again after the original update was blighted with freezing problems.

The update was originally released earlier this month but users had quickly discovered that it caused their phones to freeze during boot stage and in some cases not operate at all.

The rollout of Android 2.2, AKA Froyo, has been affected by similar issues on other networks and devices, too. The Dell Streak was a previous victim on O2, while Orange was forced to postpone its HTC Desire update after struggling to test for compatibility, which some believe have to do with the device's custom user interface.

Android 2.2 brings an assortment of new features and improvements, including memory, speed and battery optimisations, HD video recording, USB tethering and Wi-Fi hotspot functionality.

The biggest strength of Android is also its biggest weakness. With so many devices on so many networks, Android updates will always face delays and issues.

The problem lies with so many parties involved in the testing process, the manufacturers, the networks, that by the time an update actually gets released, another one is already around the corner. Google needs to find a solution to this fast because all this is doing is creating a lot of frustration for Android users.

Say what you like about Apple, but at least it's doing a much better job at customer satisfaction.

@Jack Well put Jack. I couldn't agree more. However I feel I should retort, that the same argument goes for Apple in a sense, that 'their biggest strength is also their weakness' Apple have absolute control over their hardware and software.

Meaning that their comply or die mentality, however successful and, organised as they are. have their own weaknesses. In my opinion the android market, and its community are developing fast and unrestrained, to an extent, by any 'overlording' control factors. Allowing their market to grow as a true open source community should, free.. and in any way the community wants... not 'jailbreaking' required..

Take you pick safe and pretty or fast and furious!!

Writing this on a Mac, and once was longing for an Iphone 4 but not anymore

PS. I cant wait for the Desire HD to come out, already bought a 32gb memory card for it, thank you ebay ;-) !!

Once bitten twice shy - got a Motorola Dext (Cliq) 8 months ago . Having promised 2.x update many months ago (around 8 months :-) ) , which IS being released in North America I believe, it appears that EMEA and Far East are NOT getting upgraded past existing Android 1.5 - apparently 1.5 is the optimal version for us??? Unfortunately this means that all new Apps which require 1.6 or above refuse to install :-(

Too many versions, skins, regional requirements e.t.c. means updates are going to get slower or even stop across a number of manufacturers. I was looking at replacing Dext with a S-E X10 BUT checked their forums and they are suffering delays/cancellation(?) of their 2.x update as well ....

Google/Android/manufacturers need to get their act sorted out or it's all going to blow up in their faces.

Looking at iPhone 4 now (despite the cost)
