HTC is readying three Android powered tablets for release this year, reports suggest, amid predictions the nascent slate market will explode over the next 12 months.

Speculation over the South Korean phone maker’s plans stem from unnamed sources at component makers cited in a report from DigiTimes. Assuming they’re to be believed, the first of the slates to hit the market will be dubbed the HTC Flyer and will debut in the second quarter.

According to our tech deep throats, the Flyer somewhat predictably takes its design cues from its best-selling Desire range of smartphones. More surprising though is that it’s expected to launch with Android 2, AKA Gingerbread, on board, rather than the newer Honeycomb version of the OS, which is optimised for tablets.

The other two slates purportedly being prepped - one of which must surely be the rumoured HTC Scribe - will, however, run Gingerbread and will both arrive on contract plans in the UK from June.

Specifications for all three devices are as yet unconfirmed.
