HTC has begun testing Android 2.3 Gingerbead on the HTC Desire, it has announced, as the phone maker keeps owners updated in the wake of a social networking storm.

Last week, HTC incurred the ire of Desire owners everywhere after abandoning an update to Gingerbread on the grounds that the handset had insufficient memory to run it smoothly.

The obloquy prompted a quick volte-face, however. Within a matter of hours, HTC said it will be making the newer version of Android available and that it would facilitate this by ditching some resource-hungry apps from its Sense custom skin.

Mindful of the need to keep Desire users onside, today it’s issued a progress report with the news that it has begun testing Gingerbread on the phone and that it expects to the move to the next stage of trialling the bump next week.

A post on HTC’s official Facebook page stated: “Hi all- We're excited to share that we are testing our build of Gingerbread for HTC Desire and will start doing quality assurance for it this week.

“When we have an update on availability we'll post another announcement. Thanks for your support!”

News of developments comes after it emerged that HTC has already pushed out Gingerbread in Australia and that instead of only scrapping select apps, it has apparently discarded Sense wholesale.
