HTC has denied claims it is playing Apple as much as $8 for every Android handset it sells as part of last week’s settlement with the California-based phone-maker.

In the wake of the agreement, the exact terms of which were unannounced, reports surfaced that HTC is paying Apple between $6 and $8 every time it sells an Android phone that uses technology patented by Apple.

Not a bit of it, reckons HTC’s Peter Chou. According to the Taiwanese company's CEO, the numbers being reported are so wide of the mark as to be positively “outrageous”.

He told delegates at a KDDI product launch in Tokyo: "I think that these estimates are baseless and very, very wrong.

“It is an outrageous number, but I'm not going to comment anything on a specific number. I believe we have a very, very happy settlement and a good ending.”

The agreement will also see the companies license patents to each other for ten years and was welcomed by tech-watchers concerned that the recent rash of litigious disputes between gadget-purveyors is likely to hamper innovation.

Apple is currently embroiled in a much more bitter courtroom battle with Samsung, which has ruled out any sort of HTC-style entente and pledged to fight its US rival tooth and nail.
