Samsung Galaxy S6: Next year’s phone already holds much promise

The rumour mill surrounding non–Apple devices continues to be a bit of a curiosity.

Chatter about Android phones tends to focus on specific leaks rather than supply chain rumours.

However, Samsung’s Galaxy phones have bucked that trend for a couple of years now and look as if they’re going to continue to do so in 2015.

The Samsung Galaxy S6 has already been touted in a number of leaks and tips.

Dubbed ‘Project Zero’ , it’s been pegged as Samsung’s biggest and most important release since it first made waves with the Galaxy brand.

And with good reason. 2014 has been a disaster for Samsung, sales and profits sliding as Apple goes from strength to strength.

The signs around the Galaxy S6, though, are promising.

The latest leak, apparently from a benchmark test on the new phone, suggests the device will come with some seriously impressive specs.

As well as Android Lollipop as standard, the handset is said to have a massive 5.5–inch Quad HD screen, the latest Qualcomm processor, a 20 megapixel camera round the back and an improved five megapixel effort up front.

The big deal, though, is said to be the all–metal design.

Samsung has hinted at this already with its Galaxy Note 4 and new Galaxy A series phones.

But it’s going to have to go better than those phones if it really wants to compete in the design stakes.

Apple, LG and HTC have all made better looking phones than Samsung this year. Its Galaxy S5 was a plasticky, dated effort that left consumers cold.

However, it seems Samsung has learned its lesson.

Rumours point to something special, a new take that will help it secure its position as the world’s biggest mobile maker in 2015.

That’s not to say that problems aren’t likely to rear their heads.

A release date around spring is expected, by which point we’ll know the exact sales figures of Apple’s new, large screen iPhones and probably have had a look at new Android rivals at Mobile World Congress.

Samsung cannot simply rely on design change being its sole driving factor. Its proprietary software needs to be less obvious and more user friendly, with Google services front and centre.

However, early signs show there’s enough to be excited about.

If last year is anything to go by, we’ll be seeing a lot more rumours about the Galaxy S6 as the new year gets underway.
