The Vauxhall Astra is loved by its fans and ranks among the UK’s top 11 most popular compact hatchbacks. Vauxhall continues to keep things simple with updates to Astra’s design while amping up the efficiency and tech of the latest model.
Customers seeking hatchbacks do so primarily because they need the versatility it offers, greater space, cheaper to run and easier to get around in narrower and more confined urban areas. Basically, a car that is less but able to deliver more – when it comes to value and efficiency but is still great to drive.
Vauxhall Astra has been delivering since 1979 and is one of the UK’s best-selling hatchbacks.
The seventh generation Vauxhall Astra comes in four models: SE, Business Edition Nav, Sri and Elite Nav Premium. Vauxhall boasts about its added tech and it is brimming with gadgets and driver assistance features as standard across its models. Fuel efficiency has increased, and the Astra emits up to 19% less CO2 emissions than its previous model.
To highlight the kit available, among the SE’s standard features are a multimedia infotainment system that includes a 7-inch colour screen, Bluetooth streaming and mobile phone portal and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto among its listed features. There is also a hill start assist, tyre pressure monitoring and six airbags.
At other higher levels of trim such as the SRI, you’ll find safety elements such as forward collision alert, following distance indicator and lane departure warning with lane assist. The sportier version adds lots more pleasing features.
Other interior elements for child safety include ISOFIX child seat mountings allowing for a secure fitting and preventing forward movement in the event of an accident. There are child-proof locks on rear doors.
As for the exterior the new Astra has redesigned its 3D radiator grille which open and close automatically improving airflow. The IntelliLux LED® Matrix Lights adds impact style wise and is eco-friendly. Speaking of style, the alloy wheels perk up the Astra’s look and come in 16, 17, and 18-inch.
This seventh generation Astra has four petrol and three diesel turbo-charged engines available and they’re cheaper to run and still excellent to drive. The three-cylinder diesel engines according to Carbuyer promise superb efficiency.
You can bump up power levels with petrol engines 1.2L Turbo at 108bps; 128bps or 1.2L at 143bps. The fuel efficiency on the petrol engines will provide up to 54.3mpg. The 1.4L Turbo comes with stepless transmission and returns up to 50.4mpg.
The 1.5L diesel comes available with 104bhp or 122bhp (the latter for the first time has a nine-speed automatic gearbox) and delivers 65.7mpg.
