LG's next Android-based smartphone, the Optimus, has been officially confirmed as on its way to the UK for an early May release date.

The LG Optimus GT540 has a three-inch resistive touchscreen display, Wi-Fi, GPS for navigation and a three megapixel camera.
It uses version 1.6 of the Android platform which matches up to current entry level smartphone features and should help to keep its price down at the lower end of the market.
LG already has the GW620 InTouch Max running Android out now, but this has a full QWERTY keypad for serious messagers, which is something that the Optimus lacks, for better or worse.
This means that the touchscreen interface will have to be easy to use and responsive in order to gain attention.
LG's UK arm has said that it will be making the Optimus available from the first of May. At the moment, there are no details as to which networks will be offering the phone.
