Motorola patents a smartwatch with a flexible screen

We've heard rumours of a Motorola smartwatch before, but this is the closest we've come to seeing what it'll look like.

The above image comes from a Motorola patent for a smartwatch with a flexible display. The patent application was filed back in June 2012.

It details a method whereby "a flexible chassis module" can be added to a display module.

"This method allows flexing of an electronic device with a flexible display for curved viewing, if desired, or bending with minimal stress," according to the patent.

This means the screen could not only bend to fit your wrist, it could also bend along with the watch's chassis.

Flexible screens have been promised for years, but they're only just starting to appear. LG's Optimus G Flex - in stores today, though not on sale until February - is shaped to fit your face better, while Samsung's Galaxy Round is curved on the horizontal axis, designed so when you prod it it tilts and shows your notifications.

Flexible displays will come in very handy with smartwatches, however. Apple is rumoured to be readying a techy timepiece with a flexible screen, as are Google, LG, Microsoft, and Intel.
