An official announcement from Twitter has confirmed that the micro blogging site is working on its own Android app to provide first-party support for tweeters around the world.

Twitter's Evan Williams spoke about the development of the Android version of Twitter during the Twitter Chirp conference earlier in the week.

Twitter acquired third-party app Tweetie recently and it has said that it will be turning this service into an officially sanctioned app for the iPhone. It could be planning a similar process for the Android platform.

BlackBerry users recently got their first official taste of Twitter thanks to a new app, although in this instance the software was developed in-house from the ground up, rather than being a rebranded third party app.

Android users have a wide selection of apps currently offering Twitter support, including Twitdroid and Seesmic.

It will be interesting to see whether the arrival of an official app will kill off these current Twitter kings.

Experts are urging app developers who have their eye on integrating Twitter functionality to create software that does much more than emulate Twitter's standard functions.
