The latest smartphone optimised version of Google’s Android operating system will land on the current crop of Sony Ericsson smarties in October, an anonymous source has confirmed.

According to a shadowy figure who got in touch with SEMC Blog, Android Gingerbread 2.3.4 will reportedly be rolled out to high-end Sony Ericsson handsets released this year starting October. This includes the Xperia Arc, the Play, the Pro and the Neo, but excludes the likes of the X10 mini, X10 mini pro and the X8. However, there is a slim chance that the X10 may receive the update if testing goes through smoothly.

The update will bring several bug fixes to the handsets as well as new functionality, such as Sony’s audio filter technology xLOUD for a clearer, crisper sound quality in noisy environments.

Sony Ericsson has yet to confirm the validity of the story, but watch this space as we bring you more information as we get it.
