Of the hundreds of broadband providers in the UK, there are only a few really well-known brands, such as BT, Sky, Vodafone, Plusnet and Virgin Media. There's also a range of mid-sized providers and a high number of small alternative broadband providers (also known as 'altnets'). Each one has its own list of pros and cons that could suit your broadband needs.
In this Uswitch broadband provider list, we've outlined the costs, features, pros and cons of some of the UK's biggest Wi-Fi providers and their networks.
Find out all you need to know about comparing different UK internet suppliers and the services they offer.
How to compare broadband providers
Here are a few things you can do to make sure you choose the right broadband provider for your household:
- Find one that offers the service you need
Do you just need broadband? Or would you also want to add TV, landline or mobile phone plans to your package? Some providers will offer more of these services bundled together, at a higher cost.
- Carefully choose internet speed
The price of a broadband package can often be determined by its average broadband speed. Make sure to choose a speed that matches what your household does online day-to-day.
- Compare their prices
Monthly prices can also range quite a lot between different providers. If you have a particular budget that you'd like to keep to, you can filter your results to providers that typically offer more affordable packages.
- Read reviews and check customer ratings
Finally, it's also important to see what other customers think of each provider. If you see a perfectly-suited internet package, but the provider has a reputation for poor customer service, you may get a better experience with a slightly less suited package.
Your requirements for a broadband service will determine which provider is likely the best one for you. The right provider for you could be driven by cost, reliability, internet speed, customer service, additional services offered, or all five.

Fibre-optic internet providers
Almost all UK-based providers offer fibre broadband of some type. However, depending on the provider and the type of fibre connection available to your home, you can currently choose from a wide variety of speeds.
Fibre-optic broadband speeds can range from superfast part-fibre levels at 30Mbps all the way to an astounding 1Gbps (1,000Mbps) and beyond with full fibre. But the speeds you can get at your home will depend on whether part-fibre or full-fibre is available in your area.
Full fibre broadband
Full fibre is available to around three-quarters of UK homes, offering high-speed services up to 1Gbps and beyond. Also known as fibre-to-the-premises, this is simply where fibre-optic cables connect directly from the provider's broadband exchange to your home.
Full fibre connections provide a huge speed boost and a much more reliable connection compared to part-fibre, part-copper connections. So you could treat getting a full fibre package as future-proofing your home for decades to come.
Full fibre coverage is rapidly growing, with dozens of providers emerging all over the country to reach as many homes as possible. Our guide explains more about full fibre broadband.
Virgin Media cable broadband
Virgin Media offers a different type of broadband via its own independent cable network. It offers speeds similar to full fibre and about 60% UK coverage.
It’s not technically full fibre, but it relies on 'coaxial' cables from a local street cabinet to your home. This offers faster speeds and more reliability than connections that rely on standard copper phone lines to do the job.
Right now, Virgin isn’t working to expand its network coverage at much of a rapid rate. It’s currently working to convert its cable connections to its own full fibre offering, which is easier and more efficient to run.
Part-fibre broadband
The most widely available type of fibre broadband is part-fibre, which is also called fibre-to-the-cabinet. It's supplied by Openreach's part-fibre, part-copper network, which hosts the majority of the suppliers listed above and is accessible by over 98% of the country.
Part-fibre broadband provides speeds between 30 and 70Mbps, so it’s the slowest and least reliable fibre broadband option available today. Plus, it’s now priced quite similarly (and sometimes even higher) than full fibre offers from the same providers. So if you can get full fibre where you live, you could probably enjoy a much better service for even less.
Who are the fastest internet providers?
Internet providers who can deliver gigabit broadband will be the fastest option right now. These will primarily be full fibre providers, but as previously mentioned, Virgin Media is also one of the fastest, thanks to its cable broadband technology.
Full fibre broadband is now available to around three-quarters of UK homes, and it's offered by dozens of different providers through a select few networks. Here’s a quick breakdown of all the providers on Uswitch that offer full fibre and the networks they rely on to deliver it.

What to look out for when comparing broadband providers
Some broadband providers are known to be better at certain things than others, and each one will have at least one unique selling point that'll make their offers attractive to a customer with a particular set of needs.
Here, we'll discuss the main considerations when choosing a broadband deal and which UK internet providers might be more suitable for each.
Value for money
Cost is obviously important to consider when choosing a broadband provider. A certain provider could offer deals that offer more bells and whistles than you could ever need, but if the monthly price is out of your budget, you may regret it in the long run.
Plusnet and NOW Broadband are popular choices for affordable internet deals. They're both widely available across the country and offer strong fibre-optic deals.
Another great way to compare value for money is by looking at the amount of internet speed a provider offers for the monthly price they charge. And if you do so, it's actually the more regional alternative providers that come out on top.

Broadband social tariffs
If you receive Universal Credit or another form of financial support from the government, you could qualify for a discounted broadband deal.
Called ‘social tariffs’, these broadband packages work exactly the same way as normal broadband connections, offering the same speeds and connection quality. However, they’ve been given a big discount on the monthly price and run on rolling contracts, which makes it much easier for those struggling financially to get online.
These deals also don’t have annual price increases, which means you’ll always pay the same amount you agreed to before signing up.
To learn more, take a look at our broadband social tariffs guide.
If you're not eligible for a social tariff but would like an affordable price for your broadband, you can compare a range of cheap broadband deals with Uswitch.

Broadband speed
You'll need to make sure that the deal you choose has the right speed for everything your household does online.
If you're in a very small household and you only really go online to check social media or browse the web, you may not need more than 50Mbps speeds for what you do online.
However, if you live with more than two people who use the internet, or you often stream high-quality TV, work from home or play internet-hungry online games, a faster broadband package would likely be best. 100Mbps and faster packages are now available to over 80% of the UK.
You can run a broadband speed test while connected to your Wi-Fi to see what speeds you're currently getting and whether you could benefit from a better connection.
Customer service
As a paying customer, you want to be assured that the provider you choose will treat you with care, competency, and urgency.
Good customer service makes life easier, whether through complaint handling, helpful communications, or fixing connection issues.
Get more information on which broadband provider has the best customer service.
If you have a complaint to make about your broadband service, it's best to take it up with your provider to see if they can find a solution first, instead of going straight to Ofcom or the ombudsman. Here's how to complain to your broadband provider.
Who regulates broadband providers?
Ofcom is the UK regulator for communications services. It covers broadband, TV, mobile phone networks and home phone services.
Broadband providers need to follow Ofcom's rules, regulations, and standards to ensure they're offering a fair and transparent service for their customers. Ofcom regularly updates its policies to adapt to industry changes, consumer behaviour, or new technology, and it can also reprimand providers that don't comply with those rules.
Essentially, Ofcom is there to ensure that you have the smooth, painless, and enjoyable broadband experience that you deserve. For example, it recently enforced providers to commit to One Touch Switch, a new switching process designed to make it easier than ever for customers to change providers.
You can learn all about One Touch Switch and how it makes upgrading to full fibre broadband much simpler with our detailed guide.
What's the best broadband provider?
There are many providers out there, and they all excel at different parts of a broadband service. There’s no single ‘best provider’ for everyone, only the best option for you. However, you can view our Uswitch Telecoms Awards to see the providers we’ve recently highlighted for their excellence.
You can also read our Uswitch broadband provider reviews for much more detail about how customers (and our experts) view their service.
