Samsung fails to meet expectations as Apple remains the UK’s favourite

  • iPhone 5 holds onto the top spot as the UK’s favourite mobile

  • Despite high rankings from pre-orders, Samsung’s Galaxy S4 fails to improve ranking since April launch

  • Samsung range still dominates with five handsets in the top ten

  • No new entries this month, proving Brits know what they like and are sticking with brand loyalty.

Apple’s iPhone 5 remains Britain’s most popular smartphone, as the Samsung Galaxy S4 fails to live up to the hype. According to the Uswitch.com Mobile Tracker, which is based on live searches, pre-orders and sales, UK consumers are also sticking with what they know and love, leaving the top ten mostly stuck on pause.

Despite an encouraging start, placing 3rd in the charts before it even went on sale in April, the Samsung Galaxy S4 hasn’t become the juggernaut everyone expected it to. While still holding a respectable podium position, flashy features like its eye-tracking technology haven’t been enough for the smartphone sequel to topple Apple.

By comparison, the sixth generation Apple handset is still delighting tech fans seven months after its launch thanks to its sleeker design and faster speeds. After a disappointing 2012 for the Californian manufacturer, where Samsung took home the number one spot for ten months in a row, ‘the best thing to happen to iPhone since iPhone’ is living up to its name.

But it’s not all bad news for Samsung. Despite the inevitable slip, the South Korean giant is still dominating the charts. The S4’s older siblings, the Galaxy S2, S3 as well as the Ace and Note 2 mean it has a whopping five handsets in the top ten, proving customers are still taken with Samsung’s full range.

Meanwhile HTC saw its ONE series fall two places. Despite having its finger on the social media pulse by putting networking at the forefront of its design with a live homescreen that posts your favourite news and social media site feeds, the device saw its popularity wane last month.

Number one handset – it’s a hat trick! For the third consecutive month the Apple iPhone 5 (16GB) is the UK’s bestselling phone.

New entries – no new device managed to crack the top ten in May, but with the new Lumia 925 launching mid-June we should see the Finnish manufacturer shake up the market next month.

Biggest losers – the HTC One series falls two spots after its third month in the chart, while the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 is clinging on to a chart position after dropping one place to number nine.

Ernest Doku, telecoms expert at Uswitch.com, says: “While the Galaxy S4 has been an unmitigated success on a global scale, price drops and special offers barely a month after launch shows that the heavily-hyped device has needed a bit more oomph to make waves in the UK market.

“As interest from the hardcore tech fans has waned, Samsung really has had a fight on its hands to wrestle some of that broader consumer attention away from Apple – even with a feature-rich handset like the S4.

“However, the announcement of yet more additions to the Galaxy family – a more compact offshoot in the S4 Mini as well as a Note refresh are due to appear at a showcase in London – shows that the Korean manufacturer has no intention of letting up within the smartphone space.

“In terms of June, all eyes are towards Nokia’s Lumia 925, set for a mid-month launch. Taking the Windows Phone-powered Lumia 920 as a template and delivering a leaner, camera-focused sequel, it will be interesting to see whether an impressive iteration can stir up a seemingly static table for the Summer.”
