Uswitch.com comments on government’s £250 million capital investment for super-fast broadband

Commenting on the Government’s £250million capital investment to ensure super-fast broadband gets to 95% of UK homes and businesses by 2017,Marie-Louise Abretti, broadband expert at Uswitch.com, says: “While very welcome news, people are likely to be sceptical about another Government broadband pledge in light of yesterday’s Spending Review, which saw the Chancellor abandon his initial ultra-fast broadband rollout plans.

“And there is a blind spot. The Government’s agenda focuses on connectivity and reach, but fails to look at price. It’s all very well promising super-fast speeds, but only if people know they are available and, more importantly, can afford to pay for them.

“Almost two thirds of Britons can now get super-fast broadband, but a third still don’t know whether or not it’s available in their area, and 48% say it’s simply too expensive for them.

“As well as targeting growth by ensuring that businesses get super-fast connections, consumers need access to the internet too. In order to bridge the digital divide it needs to be universal, fast and keenly priced.

“It’s also vital that the investment is targeted at bringing isolated rural areas up to speed as fast as possible and tackling broadband blackspots. It’s essential the forgotten 5% aren’t those isolated geographically, who are often the ones who would benefit most from internet access.”
