Three’s new deal takes PAYG back to its roots

Commenting on the launch of the new Pay As You Go (PAYG) deals from Three, Ernest Doku, telecoms expert at Uswitch.com, says: “This new plan sees pay-as-you-go taken back to basics. These deals have become increasingly like contracts, with top-ups buying bundles of minutes, texts and data – but without the commitment.

“But while these plans offer great inclusive minutes, texts and data, the costs for extras is quite high. This is where the new plan from Three excels. Those who underestimate how much they’ll use their phone won’t be paying through the nose when they need more.  Data-hungry consumers will be the real winners, with a MB costing just 1p on Three – extra data on other PAYG plans can cost as much as 65p.

“Although Three’s new plan has a low rate for calls, minutes and texts, bundle-style plans offer great value – if mobile users don’t go outside of their allowance. Just £10 of credit on Three’s would be enough for 100 mins, 200 texts and 500 MB. But a GiffGaff SIMO deal, on a one month rolling contract, offers 500 mins, unlimited texts and 1GB data. While Orange’s SIMO deal comes with 500 mins, 500 texts and 100MB of data for £10 – the same would cost £26 on Three’s plan.

“However, this plan is for those who want PAYG in its purest form. It’s also perfect for an emergency phone as the credit doesn’t expire, like it does with many of other pay-as-you-go plans. Also, consumers don’t have to predict how they’ll use their phone and buy a deal to suit.

“It remains to be seen if Three’s proposition shakes up the market, but what it does do is deliver simple, clear and transparent pricing for consumers who want to pick and mix minutes, texts and data – and have to choice to do so differently every month.”
