Apple’s holy trinity of iPhones sees off Samsung’s flagship hope

  • iPhone 5 still the UK’s favourite mobile phone for July – topping the chart for a 5th consecutive month

  • Apple dominates the top three chart positions, with the older iPhone 4 knocking Samsung’s Galaxy S4 off the podium and into 4th place

  • Samsung’s hold over the chart is waning – it had five phones in the top ten in June, and only four in July – but there’s hope in the form of the S4 Mini.

Once again, Apple has tackled its South Korean rival to the ground to be crowned king of the mobile chart. Three iPhones now sit atop the Uswitch.com Mobile Tracker – based on live searches, pre-orders and sales – with the iPhone 5, iPhone 4S and iPhone 4 in 1st, 2nd and 3rd places respectively.

For five months in a row, the iPhone 5 and 4S have been top of the chart. And, if this wasn’t enough to cement Apple’s popularity, a symbolic victory came in the shape of the iPhone 4 in July, which elbowed Samsung’s flagship Galaxy S4 into 4th place.

While July’s chart features fewer Samsung phones than June’s, the hotly anticipated Galaxy S4 Mini – which only launched on June 29th – has already reached number seven. Pundits had questioned the need for a lower-power, cheaper version of the S4 when mobile fans could just buy the older and affordable S3, but its early popularity would suggest this is one to watch. However, it’s not such good news for the Galaxy Ace and Galaxy S2, which were last month at 8th and 9th in the chart, and have now been relegated to 9th and 10th.

Also down is the Sony Xperia Z, which entered the chart back in February at 5th position and peaked at a respectable number four, before dropping to 8th in July. There are still no entries for Nokia, which has been absent from the chart since January. The Lumia 925 has failed to make a dent since its mid-June launch.

Number one handset – once again, for the 5th consecutive month, the Apple iPhone 5 is the UK’s most popular phone.

New entries – Samsung has enjoyed July’s only new entry, with its Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini.

Biggest losers – all but one of Samsung’s chart entries have dropped one place, while the Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini has dropped out of the top ten altogether.

Ernest Doku, telecoms expert at Uswitch.com, says: “Those who thought the reign of the iPhone was over should never underestimate the power of Apple. Samsung has already proved that it’s possible to upset the Applecart – when the Galaxy S3 topped the chart for almost a year – but so far it hasn’t managed to replicate the same success with its flagship S4.

“But pricing is king. Part of the problem for Samsung is that you can get a free iPhone 5 from as little as £29 per month, due in no small part to its impending sequel. And with the older iPhone 4 and 4S offering affordable alternatives to the latest and greatest, the S4 has a real fight on its hands from older rivals. Retailers are fighting back however by shaving the price of Samsung’s flagship, as well as pushing the compact Galaxy S4 Mini, making for a hot summer in the smartphone space.

“July’s chart is all about Apple and Samsung, but the HTC One and Sony Xperia Z are holding fast, flying the flag for other manufacturers. They prove that many mobile fans don’t want to follow the crowd, and if the price and the specs are right, people aren’t afraid to try something new. The premium HTC One, with its sensitive ‘ultrapixel’ camera costs as much as the S4 and iPhone 5, and yet it’s still a bestseller.”
