EDF Energy offers three months extra protection on Blue + Price Promise plan

As speculation over energy price rises mounts, the battle between suppliers to offer the most competitive fixed price energy deals heats up. EDF Energy has today fired its latest salvo by offering an extra three months protection on its Blue + Price Promise plan.

The added price protection means that customers are sheltered from price hikes until 30th December, 2014. Importantly this protection comes at minimal extra cost – just £1,210 a year as opposed to £1,209 previously. This is £71 a year more expensive than the cheapest plan on the market, M&S Energy’s Fix and Save tariff, which is also fixed, but with the fix expiring at the end of September next year (30th September, 2014).

EDF Energy’s offering is also £143 a year cheaper than the average standard plan for those paying by cash or cheque. Therefore this plan offers an opportunity for those looking to trim down their energy bill as well as to enjoy price protection.

However, EDF Energy’s trump card is that the boosted Blue + Price Promise plan still comes without the catch of cancellation fees. This means that any takers are free to move elsewhere if a cheaper deal catches their eye, important given current uncertainty over future prices. The supplier has also kept its promise to let customers know when they could save £1 a week elsewhere. With M&S Energy’s cheaper plan coming with a £50 cancellation fee attached, consumers may opt to pay the little bit extra for the added freedom to shop around.

Tom Lyon, energy expert at Uswitch.com, says: “With the battle to boast the best fixed price deals in full swing, consumers look set to come out on top if they snap up one of these competitive deals. With fixed price plans now a common feature in the energy ‘best-buy’ tables, price protection doesn’t have to cost more. Consumers can rest easy in the knowledge that not only are they paying as little as possible, but they are also safeguarded from any price hikes that lurk around the corner.”
