ScottishPower launches new longest fixed price tariff on the market while helping to beat cancer

ScottishPower has today launched the longest fixed price energy deal on the market enabling customers to safeguard themselves from price rises until the end of December 2016. The plan also comes with an added bonus – a £10 donation will be made to Cancer Research UK for everyone taking up the plan and then a further £10 every year until it ends. Additionally, despite running for over three years, it doesn’t have any cancellation fees as long as the customer is switching to another ScottishPower plan. If moving to another supplier then they will incur a £25 for electricity and £25 for gas cancellation fee.

At £1,350 a year, Help Beat Cancer Fixed Price Energy January 2017 stacks up favourably against competitor plans. It is the same price as the previous longest fixed price tariff on the market, EDF Energy’s Blue + Price Freeeeze November 2016, but gives one month’s extra protection. It is also £3 a year cheaper than the average bill for a standard plan customer paying by cash or cheque. So with the protection from price rises included in the price and the added charitable donation – this plan comes out glowing.

For many however, fixing for over three years may not be necessary and there are cheaper plans available that will fix their energy prices for just a year. The cheapest plan currently on the market is M&S Energy’s Fix and Save tariff which costs just £1,139 a year and is fixed until the end of September next year. This is £211 a year cheaper than ScottishPower’s new plan, however it comes with a £50 cancellation fee across the board.

Tom Lyon, energy expert at Uswitch.com, says: “It’s great to see that ScottishPower is not only offering customers peace of mind by safeguarding them from price rises for a hefty three years, but it is also helping to beat cancer along the way. However with a cancellation fee kicking in if a ScottishPower customer wishes to leave the supplier, it’s important for customers to consider their options fully before they sign up.”
