Uswitch.com reacts to Samsung Galaxy S5 and Gear Fit launches at Mobile World Congress

Commenting on the Samsung launch event at Mobile World Congress, Ernest Doku, telecoms expert at Uswitch.com, says: “Touted as a response to demands for simplicity over eye-popping updates, Samsung seems to have stuck to getting the basics right and delivered practical specs in the Galaxy S5.

“Samsung appears to have cherry picked the most crowd-pleasing features available from other manufacturers – a fingerprint ID sensor and an attractive gold model like Apple’s iPhone 5S, a water and dust-resistant body like Sony’s Xperia Z2, and photography credentials to challenge the best from Nokia.

“What we haven’t seen on a smartphone before is a built-in heart rate monitor. Samsung is certainly playing up to the fitness craze, incorporating health apps and wearable tech. And, naturally, it’s a good segue into the launch of its complementary Gear 2 and Gear Fit smart watches. With innovative curved displays, improved customisation and changeable straps, Samsung’s latest efforts are probably the best looking bits of high-tech wrist candy on the market.

“There’s nothing wrong with catering to demand by packing features in, and the S5 is likely to prove a popular choice for anyone looking for a refreshingly high-spec change from the iPhone.

“‘Always leave them wanting more’ isn’t a tactic Samsung is deploying and, with a barrage of launches at Mobile World Congress, that’s sensible. Their strategy seems to be: the more cool features you’ve got, the more you’ll stand out from the throng.

“The S5’s software also seems to have had a radical overhaul, offering an all-new simplified user interface and bringing the most frequently used functions to the fore.

“Is the Galaxy S5 a big enough departure? Certainly not in the looks department. The perforated body for added grip looks like a gimmick, but the Galaxy S4 wasn’t a huge leap from the S3, and it’s still a UK top seller.

“By nailing many of the key concerns and queries that customers have had with current smartphones, the Galaxy S5 seems to not have put a foot wrong in tapping up the biggest features found in the competition.”
