Commenting on Ofcom’s latest research into apps, Ernest Doku, telecoms expert at Uswitch.com, says: “It’s concerning that apps are seen as safer and more secure than browsers, but it’s not hard to see why. The internet seems like a far bigger beast than an insignificant-looking app that sits on a smartphone.
“Although apps must meet certain criteria to be listed on app marketplaces, the vetting process is not particularly strict. Don’t think that because an app is in the store that it’s more secure than a browser – apps can be hacked and pose security risks, too.
“Apps have access to all kinds of personal data and, in many cases, store our credit card details to enable in-app purchases.
“More than one in ten (12%) kids under 16 have run up bills on tablets or smartphones through in-app purchases, according to our research. If parents don’t understand how apps work, and parental controls are not set, this is very easily done in a matter of seconds, and mums and dads will end up footing the bill.”
