New Uswitch.com TV ad brings home the bacon

  • Nationwide television campaign will launch this summer

  • Advert features well-known British actor Philip Glenister, of Life on Mars fame

  • TV campaign to be supported by social, email and on-site activity.

Uswitch.com, the price comparison and switching service, will launch a TV advertising campaign later this month. The 30-second daytime advertisement will be shown on TV screens for nine weeks and features British actor, Philip Glenister.

The TV advert, the first since January 2012, plays on Philip’s straight-talking persona to communicate a simple message to consumers: “in just a few clicks you could save yourself a few hundred quid”.  This message is played out against a backdrop of him preparing a typical English breakfast, highlighting the simplicity of switching and the steps people can take from their own home to save on their energy bills.

With many households battling against the rising cost of living, the new campaign is designed to raise consumers’ awareness of their energy bills and the ease with which they can reduce them.  The campaign will run from 25th August through to the end of October, encouraging consumers to review their energy needs ahead of the colder months.

The advert was created and produced by Thinking Juice. It will be supported socially by channels such as Facebook and Twitter, as well as through email and on-site activity.

Simon Hills, Head of Marketing at Uswitch.com, says: “Customer apathy is still extremely high – in fact 90% of homes have not switched energy supplier in the past year.  We wanted to give viewers a frank and straight-talking concept that cuts through the myths surrounding the perceived difficulty of switching.  Philip’s down-to-earth, good-humoured personality, evident in many of his on-screen characters, is ideal for communicating to consumers how simple and straightforward it is to compare and switch energy providers.

“First-time switchers often tell us their experience was far easier than they had expected.  We hope our campaign encourages more people to review their energy needs and consider switching, so that an even greater number enjoy the benefits of lower energy bills.”

Gellan Watt, Managing Director at Thinking Juice, says: “Uswitch is one of the biggest price comparison websites in the UK. But they have a lot of competition, some with serious media budgets, so we needed to produce an extremely hard-working campaign. Fortunately, we love a challenge.

“Our research suggests that consumers know they should switch to a cheaper energy plan, but think it’s too much hassle. They need a push. They need somebody with a no-nonsense attitude to tell them how simple it is on Uswitch.com – and to take action. Cue Philip Glenister.

“It was great working with Uswitch on this campaign, especially as it will help people save money on their energy bills at a time when things are still a bit tight.”
