Note 9 hits the right tune but at a cost

Commenting on the launch of the Samsung Note 9, Ru Bhikha, mobiles expert at Uswitch.com, says: “Samsung has really doubled down on the productivity aspects of the Note range and has pulled out all the stops to make the Note 9 especially appealing to people who live and work on the go.

“While the stylus pen is now a staple of the Note range and key to the theme of practicality that runs through these phablets, the addition of bluetooth to control features remotely makes this a much more usable addition.

“The ability to connect to a desktop and keyboard through the DeX software is a useful flourish aimed at making this handset more versatile than any of its peers, but only if people actually use it.

“DeX compatibility could see customers buying more into the Samsung ecosystem, putting even more pressure on the brand to demonstrate its half-cocked personal assistant, Bixby, is finally on the road to improvement.

“The Note 9 also features bucketloads of storage with its ‘1 terabyte ready’ functionality – available to the top end handsets – by combining its 512GB internal memory option with an upcoming SD card to double the memory available. Another crowd pleasing feature for people hoping to use their phone as a work device.

“Never backwards in looking forwards, the Note 9 is set up for superfast internet – ensuring Samsung doesn’t intend to be caught on the hop when 5G launches more widely over the next couple of years.

“In terms of overall design, the Note 9 has mostly iterative changes from last year’s 8, albeit with a slightly larger screen size of 6.4 inches.

“This is an impressive handset aimed at power users – rather than customers just craving a bigger screen,  and the price point reflects that.

“It will be interesting to see whether Samsung’s beefiest ever price tag will act as a deterrent to potential new converts despite the increased storage and extended battery life – especially as mobile users are increasingly looking for the flexibility offered by SIM-only contracts.”
