Amazon will begin ordering parts for its rumoured Amazon tablets imminently, reports suggest, in the clearest indication yet that they will drop before Christmas.
According to anonymous industry sources cited by DigiTimes, Amazon will initially order between 1.5 million and two million touch panels for the devices, with the first delivery thereof scheduled for September.
A second order for another two million display units is expected shortly after to fulfil Amazon’s aim of shipping four million tablets before the year is out, the site claims.
Suppliers with whom Amazon has initiated negotiations include intek, HannStar Display and TPK Holdings, which is a key suppler for Apple tablet components – suggesting that Amazon will be in direct competition with Cupertino for supplies too.
News of the developments comes amid speculation that Amazon is planning to bring two tablets to market simultaneously, one of which will be a premium product and the other with more stripped down functionality.
The slates are also expected to feature a switchable screen to allow users to choose between an eBook-optimised E-ink-style display and one designed for media and day to day tablet functions.
