Android L set for official unveiling

Google has confirmed it will show off the new ‘L’ version of Android during the keynote speech at tonight's I/O developer event.

Speaking with Bloomberg, Google’s Android chief Sundar Pichai said he would be revealing plans for the new software, which is set to supersede Android KitKat later this year.

This is a new approach for Google, which has previously not unveiled major Android updates until later in the year.

There are no official clues to what the 'L' version of Android will be called. However, with sweet themes dominating since the first version, Android Cupcake, don’t be shocked if this edition winds up being dubbed Lollipop.

Google will also use the I/O keynote to reveal more about its Android Wear platform, along with a series of new smartwatches using the operating system.

The search giant has already confirmed this week that it is releasing Google Glass in the UK, with a £1,000 price tag for the still-in-beta smart specs.

6,000 people are expected to attend this year’s Google I/O in San Francisco, as Google looks to reassert its position as a mobile leader following Apple’s impressive plans for its new iOS 8 software.
