With an animated tearjerker, and Hollywood A-listers taking to chat shows, your best bet is to stay in and avoid the crowds this New Year's Eve.

Up 2:50pm, BBC One up Recently widowed balloon salesman Carl (Ed Asner) decides now's the time to go and see the legendary Paradise Falls in South America. To do so, he ties thousands of balloons to his house and turns it into a makeshift hot-air balloon. But unbeknownst to him, eight-year-old boy scout Russell (Jordan Nagai) has come along for the ride. Will the old man rediscover his inner child and stop being such a grouch? You betcha. A warm hug of a film.

New Year Live 9pm, Channel 4 alan carr specstacular Alan Carr gets the ball rolling this New Year's Eve, with his 'New Year Specstacular'. He'll welcome 2016 with plenty of celebrity guests, sketches, and lashings of booze. Guests include EastEnders wideboy Danny Dyer, Mel B, Greg Davies, Kelly Brook, Ellie Goulding and The Vamps. If previous years are anything to go by, expect a party atmosphere, and maybe some chat if we're lucky.

The Graham Norton Show 10:35pm, BBC One graham norton Norton's chat show is always a bit more restrained, but no less star-studded. 'Hunger Games' star Jennifer Lawrence will be on the sofa, alongside Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg, who are promoting their latest film 'Daddy's Home'. Not bad company to see in the new year, we think you'll agree.
