freeview play explore

Freeview Play has been given a new feature that aims to give you more control over your viewing. Called Explore, it brings together all of the day's best on-demand content from the BBC, ITV, Channel 4, Channel 5, and other Freeview Play broadcasters.

Explore lives as a separate tab in the Freeview Play menu. It divides shows up into a carousel of 10 genres, including Comedy, Drama & Soaps, Entertainment, Factual, Movies, Sport, and a seasonal category that changes depending on the time of year or an upcoming event (for example 'Christmas' or 'Halloween').

The broadcasters themselves choose what goes in the tab. The plan is to highlight lesser-known shows, rather than the stations' big hitters. At the moment, people curate what goes in there, but in future it could be decided by an algorithm, according to Freeview.

Suggestive search means when you start typing, you'll be presented with 10 suggestions of what you might be looking for. This refines as you type.

There's also a Help and Alerts section that will give you instructional videos and information about updates to the service.

Explore is a new way of cutting through the chaff, which definitely gets our vote. Look out for it on Freeview Play TVs and set-top boxes later this month.
