Samsung Galaxy Xcover Android tough phone unveiled

Samsung has announced a new, robust addition to the burgeoning range of Galaxy branded phones, joining the mid-range effort the Galaxy R and the rumoured 3D capable take on the Galaxy S2.

Dubbed the Xcover, the handset’s spec sheet is broadly in line with the likes of budget blowers such as the Ace and Fit – think: Android 2.3 Gingerbread out of the box with Sammy’s custom skin slathered over the top and the standard array of connectivity options.

Also on board is a single rear-facing 3.2-megapixel camera with LED flash and the Swype touchscreen typing app.

However, the twist this time around is that the Xcover features an ultra scratch-resistant 3.2-inch touchscreen and is IP67-certified. That means it’s best-in-class for water and dust resistance and is capable of being submerged in water for up to half an hour and still come up smiling.

Right now, Samsung has only confirmed a German release. However, given the impact the similarly hard as nails Motorola Defy made on these shores we expect that to change very soon.

If watchmakers can make watches waterproof to 50m without compromising design, why can't mobile phone companies incorporate the same technology?
