Samsung Galaxy S3 corporate generic

Samsung’s newly launched Galaxy S3 is setting the charts alight, but it’s not done so without a few hiccups, with a broken microphone reported to be the handset’s biggest downfall.

Barring an early delay for the ‘pebble blue’ edition, the Galaxy S3 has managed an otherwise buttery smooth landing for a major product, earning a glowing review from yours truly and selling by the boatload.

However, that doesn’t mean it’s necessarily immune to the all-too-common tribulations of flagship phones. According to a recent study by repair specialist, Fix Ya, “a microphone malfunction which causes users to be unable to hear the person on the other end of the line”, has been the biggest source of grievances - a whopping 50 per cent - from early adopters.

“Following hanging up the phone, signal strength will deteriorate (and oftentimes disappear) for minutes at a time,” Fix Ya added.

Exactly what’s causing the problem wasn’t explained, but updating to the latest firmware update, which begun rolling out last week, will apparently remedy it for good. However, as it’s not available everywhere just yet, you can restart the phone for a temporary fix.

20 per cent of users also complained of a below strength Wi-Fi signal, both at home and hotspots at cafes and whathaveyou. Fortunately Samsung is aware of the issue and is working on a solution.

The Galaxy S3’s main rival, the iPhone 4S is not impervious to issues either. The battery life on Apple’s kit has drawn the most criticism, with 45 per cent of iFans unhappy with the rapid drain of juice, which is made worse by the fact you can’t replace the battery.

Hopefully some of this annoyance will be alleviated in the upcoming iOS 6 update, which brings a deluge of performance optimisations to the handset.
