Samsung Galaxy S3 white and blue

Christmas in the smartphone charts belonged to Samsung Galaxy smartphones, according to uSwitch’s latest Mobile Tracker, as kits from the South Korean company left Apple’s smartphones trailing.

The tracker, which is based on an aggregation of searches, pre-orders and sales from Omio’s network of comparison and consumer technology sites, reveals that the top three places in December were held by Samsung handsets.

In at number-one was the Galaxy S3, with the ageing S2 tucked in at number two and the budget-friendly Ace ascending to the medallist’s podium to take third place.

Completing an all-Android top four is the LG Nexus 4, which seems on course to buck the trend of disappointing sales showings for earlier Nexus-branded kits.

It’s not until positions five and six that the iPhone appears in the form of the iPhone 4S and iPhone 5 respectively, in a disappointing showing for Apple during the festive period when the purveyor of eminently giftable objects of desire might have been expected to dominate.

And compounding that agony for Tim Cook and co is that - the Nokia Lumia at number seven, aside - Samsung handsets make up the rest of the chart, with the Note 2, S3 Mini and Ace 2 at nestling at eight, nine and ten.

Ernest Doku, telecoms expert at uSwitch.com, said: “December’s top ten chart reads like the Who’s Who of smartphones. Top of the tree were three Samsung Galaxy phones – more than matching the iPhone with a range of incredibly affordable devices.

“The enduring presence of the Ace and Galaxy S2 - both released back in 2011 - prove that a bargain price point and strong software support can keep classic handsets battling with the heavyweights.“

Doku added: “2013 looks set to introduce yet more exciting phones - January sees the make-or-break return of BlackBerry with a brand new operating system and refreshed range of devices. Rumour has it that a wave of turbo-charged Android devices are set to follow suit, while new Windows Phone 8 phones will also be looking to make an impact.

“What can be certain is that current favourites Samsung and Apple had better watch out - competition is certainly going to be hotting up in the New Year.”
