Samsung has outed two new tablets, existing in the hitherto unexplored Galaxy-gadget hinterland somewhere between the semi-retired Tab range and Note phablets.

Dubbed the Galaxy Mega 6.3 and Galaxy Mega 5, the slates pack, you’ve guessed it, 6.3-inch and 5.8-inch screens respectively. But while the former is a lavish HD number, the latter packs a slightly less impressive qHD display.

The 6.3, which is very much the higher-end model in every respect, is also home to a dual-core 1.7GHz processor, Android 4.2, an eight megapixel camera, a choice of 8GB or 16GB of on-board storage and scope to boost this by up to 64GB by adding a microSD card.

Pick up its smaller brother and you’ll get a 1.4GHz dual-core processor and the same eight-megapixel camera. But there’s no wiggle room when it comes to storage: the Mega 5.8 is available solely as an 8GB model.

JK Shin, CEO and Head of IT and Mobile Business at Samsung Electronics, said: "We are aware of a great potential in the bigger screen for extensive viewing multimedia, web browsing, and more.

"We are excited to provide another choice to meet our consumers' varying lifestyles, all while maintaining the high-quality features of the award-winning Galaxy series.”

Pricing and release dates are still firmly under wraps. But we’ll be sure to fill you in as soon as there’s any news.
