Samsung is looking to ways to cut the amount of the Galaxy S4’s internal storage that is taken up by proprietary apps and features, following consumer complaints that the phone-maker misled customers over the handset’s memory.

Customers’ grievances, which prompted a probe on BBC consumer-rights show Watchdog, followed the discovery that 8GB of the entry-level 16GB Galaxy S4’s storage capacity was expended by built-in apps and features such as the tilt-to-scroll function Smart Scroll and the intelligent pause mode, Smart Pause.

Samsung’s initial – rather bluff and not terribly politic, some might say - response, after being approached to comment by CNET, was to recommend that affected Galaxy S4 owners invest in a microSD card to boost their phone’s storage and said the storage problem was an inevitable consequence of packing the Galaxy S4 with so many features.

However, today the phone-maker appears to have had a change of heart. Not only does Samsung now sound a lot more contrite, it has also pledged that it is looking into ways of boosting capacity by optimising the software that powers the Galaxy S4.

A spokesperson for Samsung said: “We appreciate this issue being raised and we will improve our communications. Also, we are reviewing the possibility to secure more memory space through further software optimisation.

“Samsung is committed to listening to our customers and responding to their needs as part of our innovation process.”

How far Samsung is able to cut back given the sheer range of Android customisations and features that the Galaxy S4 packs remains to be seen.

But we think it’s a bit unreasonable on the part of the customers who went crazy for the S4’s innovative user interface tweaks to expect Samsung to provide them without eating into the memory substantially. And, while we think Samsung could have argued its case better early on, for that reason we can see its side on this one.
