Samsung looks set to finally reveal the first phone using its proprietary Tizen operating system. The company, along with other Tizen backers, has sent out invites to a press event on February 23rd, a day before Mobile World Congress starts in Barcelona.

The event will apparently offer, “...an exclusive sneak preview of the newest Tizen devices as well as an opportunity to learn about the major milestones that the Tizen project has hit since last year's event."

Tizen was one of MWC 2013’s biggest news stories. Despite that, the project has yet to bear fruit, giving rise to concerns that it could simply be another failed attempt by Samsung to make an impression with its software. Its Bada OS failed to catch on as Android and iOS took off.

Tizen’s other backers, which includes Intel, are hoping that it will open a new front in the smartphone wars.

Rumours flew earlier this year that Samsung was looking to end its reliance on Google Android and develop Tizen at a faster pace. While that seems unlikely, if Samsung can get a decent app ecosystem together, it could use its huge brand presence to give Google and Apple plenty to think about.
