The mobile broadband market is set to expand exponentially in the next five years, it has been predicted.
According to figures from Informa Telecoms and Media, mobile broadband services will generate more than £200 billion of revenue in 2012.
Mike Roberts, principal analyst at Informa, said: "Mobile broadband will represent close to half of all mobile service revenues in 2012, making it one of the largest and most strategically important segments of the mobile industry.
"Mobile broadband is already a significant market, but will explode in the next five years as networks, devices and services mature and spark mass-market adoption."
The platform set to dominate the sector in terms of subscriber numbers is High-Speed Packet Access, Informa predicts, followed by 1x Evolution-Data Optimised (EV-DO) and Mobile WiMAX.
Meanwhile, EVDO is expected to have the most subscribers by the end of this year, but is likely to be overhauled by HSDPA in 2009.
