Not all energy suppliers offer the Warm Home Discount Scheme. Find out which suppliers do.
The Warm Home Discount Scheme, which consists in a £140 payment, has been expanded to include anyone signed up to the Pension Credit Guarantee. The Scheme is not only designed for pensioners and some low income households are also able to claim.
Households which are unsure about whether or not they are eligible for the Scheme are advised to get in touch with their energy providers, as conditions vary.
The Warm Home Discount scheme is paid for by energy companies and is expected to cost them £315m this winter.
Not everyone expected to take advantage of scheme
Although more people are eligible for the Warm Home Discount Scheme this year not everyone is expected to take advantage of the payment.
According to Charity Director at Age UK, Caroline Abrahams, more should be done in terms of promoting the scheme.
“Clearly much more must be done to encourage these older people who need extra help the most to claim everything they are entitled to, so they don’t have to struggle through the winter,” she told BBC News.
The Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) recently stated that although 1.7m pensioners could apply for the scheme, only 1.4m are expected to take it up. The government has stated that many refuse the benefit on principle.
