Nokia’s 5800 XpressMusic smartphone has been the best-selling portable music player this year, beating out stiff challenges from dedicated devices and Apple’s iPhone.
The 5800, which comes equipped with a 3.5mm headphone jack, an impressive music player and the option of using Nokia’s Comes With Music download service, has sold some three million units since its release in January.
The strong performance - equating to one million 5800 handsets sold per month - is even more impressive for coming at a time when cash-strapped consumers had been expected to delay investing in new mobile phones.
Furthermore, in the run-up to Christmas a number of retailers reported problems sourcing stock of the 5800 – suggesting that sales may have exceeded 3 million had more phones been available.
Nokia’s claim is based on sales figures compiled by GfK for the period between January and March.
To sustain the success of the handset, Nokia has today launched a new £400,000 advertising campaign which will feature the slogan: “The No.1 selling portable MP3 player”.
Nokia is planning a number of high-profile product launches this year, including the newest addition to the XpressMusic range, the 5030.
