Special report: Top 10 Mobile Phones looks ahead at new handset launches

While some Britons will now be making plans to get away for the summer, others will already be plotting to get their hands on the latest handsets. That’s because over the course of the next few months, the UK mobile phone market is to be flooded with a host of brand-new, cutting-edge mobile phones - some of which will make even the most work-weary among us think twice about whether we really need that trip.

Among the major handset launches currently confirmed is the stand-out Nokia N97, which is the latest in the N-series of smartphones. Equipped with a large touchscreen, it also boasts a full slide-out Qwerty keyboard, five megapixel camera and HSDPA connectivity for fast downloads. Nokia fans, however, will be most interested in the new widget panel look, which offers more freedom than ever to customise your phone by dragging and dropping widgets for your favorite apps and features wherever you want on the screen.

This neat feature, coupled with the staggering popularity of its predecessor the N96, suggests that the N97 will be one of the year’s biggest sellers when it appears on Vodafone in July. There’s no word on pre-orders yet, but you can sign up for updates on Vodafone’s specially created page.

We’re just as excited about the HTC Magic. Especially after we had a hands-on look a few months ago and left feeling very impressed. Not least by its ability to download apps in a matter of seconds – something we feel is likely to elicit covetous glances from iPhone owners. But we were just as taken with the full integration of Google in the phone’s user interface, which made it a rare pleasure to use.

Due to launch on May 5th, the HTC phone will be the second Android-powered handset to hit the UK – but expect to see many more in months to come. If you’re interested in buying the phone, you can pre-order it now from Vodafone’s site. Best of all, if you’re quick you can benefit from a £5 off deal when you sign up for a £35 per month contract.

Finally, we can’t not mention the LG Viewty Smart - the successor to the hugely popular LG Viewty KU990. This is aimed at the high-end cameraphone market and is equipped with everything from an eight megapixel camera, high-quality video recording and a Schneider-Kreuznach lens. It’s also every bit as eye-poppingly stylish as LG’s collaborations with Prada. You can pick up a Viewty Smart phone from May on the Orange network.

We’ll be looking at more of the new phones set to hit the UK tomorrow.
