iPad 4 128GB model gets official

Apple will bring a new, 128GB edition of the iPad 4 to market next month, as it reiterates its status as a purveyor of premium products after debuting a low-cost slate last year.

The much rumoured, top-of-the-range slate is scheduled to land on February 5th and will sell for £639 for the Wi-Fi-only version. A 4G-enabled edition of the tablet, which offers double the memory of the previous top-end iPad 4 model but is otherwise unchanged, will be up for grabs for £739.

Apple marketing maven Phil Schiller said the need for a larger-capacity tablet was driven by the growing trend for consumers to swap slates for more trad laptops or desktop computers as multipurpose business tools and for on-the-go entertainment.

Schiller said: “With more than 120 million iPads sold, it’s clear that customers around the world love their iPads, and everyday they are finding more great reasons to work, learn and play on their iPads rather than their old PCs.”

The storage boost is thought to be aimed at heading off the challenge from Microsoft’s Surface Pro tablet which also has 128GB of storage, as well as the next-generation of Android challengers that are also expected to be equipped with similar on board memory.
