Android tablet sales outstrip iPad

Android tablets now outsell Apple’s iPad range, figures from research firm Gartner for 2013 global tablet sales reveal.

61.9% of all tablets in use now run Android. That’s up from 45.8% in 2012 and represents a major boost for manufacturers using Google's platform.

Despite the launch of the critically lauded iPad Air and iPad mini with Retina Display, Apple slipped from its top position, dropping from 52.8% in 2012 to just 36% in 2013.

It’s believed the release of numerous small–screened, budget devices has helped Android become dominant in the tablet sector, much as it has with smartphones. Samsung released a series of 7-inch devices last year, as did Google.

However, Apple remains top dog when the figures are broken down by manufacturer. Samsung is a distant second, with 19.1% of tablet sales, while Asus comes in third with 5.6%.

Microsoft saw tablet sales more than triple, but its share of the overall market remains a miserly 2.1%.
