One million UK drivers without insurance

Commenting on reports from the Motor Insurers’ Bureau (MIB) that there are one million uninsured drivers in the UK today, Rod Jones, insurance expert at Uswitch.com, says: “The soaring cost of insurance is likely to be a major reason for cash-strapped drivers chancing it and driving without insurance, making them a danger to themselves as well as other motorists. Uninsured drivers face a lose-lose situation. Not only do they run the risk of penalties and hefty fines, but they will also have a mark on their record meaning they’ll face even bigger insurance premiums in future.

“It’s no surprise the problem is particularly prevalent amongst young drivers, as they’re the ones hardest hit by rapidly rising premiums. And unfortunately, things are set to get worse when the Insurance Premium Tax increases in November. This could see drivers aged between 17 and 22 paying an average premium of £1,247 a year – an increase of almost £40 – before any other motoring bills have been paid. It’s high time a flat rate tax system was introduced.

“Although many driving costs are unavoidable, it’s important to realise that there are various actions a driver can take which can make getting on the road more affordable. For example, fitting a black box in your car or buying your car and insurance together, can both reduce your premium. Also, by doing your research across the whole market and taking the time to consider what type of cover you need, there are savings to be made. Make sure you assess all the options before committing, to ensure you’ve found the best possible deal.”
