Facebook, Bebo and MySpace are being accessed from mobile phone handsets by more and more consumers, according to research from Orange.
A study conducted by the network found that by September 640,000 of its UK users were accessing a social networking site every month.
This brought the total number of page views of social networking sites up to 66 million.
Paul Jevons, director of products at Orange UK, said the phenomenon has been boosted by the launch of handsets such as the LG KS360, which is available on a pre-pay tariff and has Facebook and MySpace integrated.
He also identified the Dolphin Tariff on Orange – which provides subscribers with unlimited access to social networking sites – as a key driver of the trend.
Mr Jevons commented: "We are seeing massive numbers of unique users and traffic in social networking and we expect that to continue. A number of things have come together such as the tariffs and the handsets that really have kickstarted social networking on mobile phones."
